HERNIATED DISCS

    What is a herniated disc?

A herniated or bulging disc is an injury to the vertebrae in the spine. This happens when one of the discs that sits between the bones of the spine is damaged, and presses on the nerves. When this happens, it causes pain in the back or neck depending on the location of the herniation in the spine. It can cause excruciating pain, loss of range of motion, and other adverse effects that cannot and should not be ignored.

    Symptoms

    • Back pain
    • Neck pain
    • Leg pain
    • Arm pain
    • Stiffness
    • Tenderness of the spine
    • Numbness and tingling

    What causes a herniated disc?

Herniated discs often happen because of the normal wear and tear associated with aging or accidents. Turning or twisting the wrong way can cause a ruptured disc, so can using your back to lift heavy objects instead of lifting with your arms and legs.

What are the treatments for a herniated disc?

If you are in pain from a herniated disc, chiropractic treatment can ease some pressure on your disc. Decompression strategies such as stretching and traction are used to expand the space between your vertebrae. You will be taught strengthening exercises to keep your spine in alignment. If you have been told that surgery is your only option, it is time to seek a chiropractor. You may discover that you can decrease your pain and move about easier again with consistent chiropractic care.
